Family Voices 2006

AVID  (Advancement Via Individual Determination)

All participating students in this year’s Family Voices project are AVID students. AVID is a college preparatory program offered in high schools throughout the world and spans all four years of high school. In order for students to be eligible for AVID they must meet certain qualifications: have ambition to attend college; be children of parents who did not complete a four year college degree; and be committed to staying in the program all four years. The emphasis Family Voices places on communication skills is a good match for the motivation of AVID students as they prepare for college.

To maintain their AVID positions, students much maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average with at least a C in every class, maintain a good attendance and citizenship record, and follow through with all of the AVID class requirements.

All AVID students are required to take the SAT l, SAT ll, and ACT. Students are counseled and provided unique guidance throughout the AVID Program. Current statistics show that of all seniors graduating from AVID Riverside, 70% attend a UC/CSU, 94% complete A-F requirements, and 98% take the SAT.

The AVID students that participated in this year’s Family Voices are juniors from La Sierra High School. The entire Family Voices project team of professionals and volunteers enjoyed working with the AVID students and truly commend the program and the achievements of the students.
