n 1926, Prince Gustavas Adolphus of Sweden and his wife, Louise, took a yearlong trip around the world. Their travels included a visit to Riverside. After exploring the Grand Canyon, the couple reached San Bernardino on July 22, 1926. The royal couple toured Redlands, then journeyed to Riverside in a motorcade of automobiles accompanied by California’s Governor, Friend Richardson.
Upon arriving at the Mission Inn, the Prince and his wife freshened up in the Presidential Suite, then headed to the Music Room, where they enjoyed a concert of Swedish music performed on the Kimball organ. Dinner in the Spanish Patio followed, with entertainment provided by Spanish costumed musicians. At 8:OO P.M., the couple left the hotel for the Riverside depot. They traveled by train to Pasadena, where they were guests of Henry Huntington, a good friend of Mission Inn owner Frank Miller.
Along with his royal duties, the Prince was a well-respected archeologist. He visited the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles as well as various archaeological sites during his trip. The Prince became the King of Sweden in 1950 and served until his death in 1973.
