Escutcheon

Updated: October 14, 2006

he escutcheon for the Mission Inn was designed by artist William Alexander Sharp. It was the “house mark” or logo for the hotel. Pictured are St. Francis of Assisi, Father Junipero Serra, and a Native American. These figures, along with the bells and crosses, evoke the missions, while the background echoes whitewashed adobe mission walls. The orange and green colors on the shield represent the orange groves of Riverside. The Raincross symbol patented by Mission Inn owner Frank Miller appears at the top of the escutcheon, and the bottom features a welcoming greeting, “Entre es su casa, amigo" – "Enter, this is your home, friend."
