melia Earhart is the world’s most famous female aviator.  She was born is Kansas on July 24, 1897, and learned to fly when she was twenty-four years old.  She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean and the first person to fly solo over both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.  In 1932 she received the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross.  She was the first woman to receive this award.  Amelia Earhart was also honored in Riverside at a ceremony held at the Mission Inn on February 3, 1936.

In 1937 Earhart attempted the first around-the-world flight at the Equator with navigator Frederick Noonan.  They vanished on July 2, 1937 over the Pacific Ocean.  They had completed almost two-thirds of the flight.  To this day, their fate remains unknown.  It is assumed the plane was lost at sea, perhaps running out of fuel.
