Stained Glass
3rd Grade Lesson Plan

Updated: September 6, 2005

hroughout the Mission Inn are beautiful examples of stained glass windows.  Stained glass windows are usually made of pieces of colored glass cut into various shapes to make pictures or patterns.  The pieces of glass are held together with strips of lead. The Tiffany windows in the St. Francis Chapel are considered the finest examples of the art of stained glass found in the hotel.  There are over 100 stained glass windows in the hotel. Other stained glass windows are in the Cloister Music Room, the St. Cecilia Chapel, and the Spanish Art Gallery.

Apparently not all the stained glass planned or considered for the Mission Inn was ever made.  The picture here is attributed to artist William Sharp.  Sharp created numerous designs and art for Mission Inn owner Frank Miller.  In this three-panel design St. Francis is shown with his right arm reaching toward the sky with a large dog at his feet.  To his left are two fish and to his right, is a single engine plane.
