uring World War II and the Korean War it was common to paint pictures on military airplanes. This was a way for the pilots and crews to recognize their plane from the other planes. They also felt it gave them luck. Many times the pictures were of Disney characters, cartoons and comic strips. The crews also gave the planes names such as Bub, What’s Up Doc, Sad Sac, and Eager Beaver.

During the Korean War there was a B-29 fighter bomber named the Mission Inn. The plane had once been stationed at March Air Force Base. The painting on the Mission Inn plane was about 10 feet wide and showed a bomb pointed at a man running for a sign that said NORTH 38th PARALLEL. The 38th Parallel was the line dividing North and South Korea.
