Artifact Descriptions
The "Hat in the Ring" insignia represents Uncle Sam's hat within a ring or circle. The US Army's 94th Aero Squadron was established at Kelly Field, Texas in 1917 and was the first squadron stationed in France during WWI. The most noted member of the 94th Aero Squadron was Captain Edward "Eddie" Rickebacker. The Squadron was re-designated the 94th Pursuit Squadron and later the 94th Fighter Squadron. In July 1946, the squadron was assigned to March Air Field. Since 2000, the squadron has been assigned to Langley Air Force Base, Virginia as part of the 1st Fighter Wing.

his small metal ring encircling a hat was the insignia for the 94th Aero Pursuit Squadron, a group of fliers during World War I. One of the members of the squadron was Eddie Rickenbacker. Before the War, Rickenbacker was an internationally known racecar driver. He went on to become the president of Eastern Airlines. On March 20, 1942, Rickenbacker was honored at the Mission Inn. He was the fifty-seventh flier to have copper wings added to the Famous Fliers Wall. Later that same year, Rickenbacker was on an inspection trip for the United States when his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Rickenbacker and six others survived on rubber rafts for twenty-four days before being rescued.
