8.12.7 Identify the new sources of large-scale immigration and the contributions of immigrants to the building of cities and the economy; explain the ways in which new social and economic patterns encouraged assimilation of newcomers into the mainstream amidst growing cultural diversity; and discuss the new wave of nativism.

8th Grade Vocabulary

assimilate

To take in and incorporate as one's own; absorb: He assimilated many new experiences on his European trip.

emigrate

To leave one country or region to settle in another; migrate: to emigrate from Ireland to Australia.

ethnic

Pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.

eurasia

Europe and Asia considered together as one continent.

illegal alien

A foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country's authorization.

immigrant

A person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

immigrate

To come to a country of which one is not a native, usually for permanent residence.

nationality

The status of belonging to a particular nation, whether by birth or naturalization: the nationality of an immigrant.

nativism

The policy of protecting the interests of native inhabitants against those of immigrants.

Old World

Europe, Asia, and Africa.

race

A group of persons related by common descent or heredity.

refugee

A person who flees for refuge or safety, esp. to a foreign country, as in time of political upheaval, war, etc.
