4th Grade Vocabulary

assimilate

To take in and incorporate as one's own; absorb: He assimilated many new experiences on his European trip.

culture

The customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group.

discrimination

The unfair treatment of people because of such things as color of skin, race, religion, or birthplace.

emigrate

To leave one country or region to settle in another; migrate: to emigrate from Ireland to Australia.

ethnic

Pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.

Eurasia

Europe and Asia considered together as one continent.

heritage

Something handed down from ones ancestors such as celebrations, food and traditions.

illegal alien

A foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country's authorization.

immigrant

A person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

immigrate

To come to a country of which one is not a native, usually for permanent residence.

nationality

The status of belonging to a particular nation, whether by birth or naturalization: the nationality of an immigrant.

nativism

The policy of protecting the interests of native inhabitants against those of immigrants.

Old World

Europe, Asia, and Africa.

population

All the people in a country or region.

race

A group of persons related by common descent or heredity.

refugee

A person who flees for refuge or safety, esp. to a foreign country, as in time of political upheaval, war, etc.

segregation

Keeping people from one race or culture separate from other people.
