3rd Grade - Vocabulary

culture

the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group

discrimination

The unfair treatment of people because of such things as color of skin, race, religion, or birthplace.

diverse

different from one another

emigrate

to leave one country or region to settle in another; migrate: to emigrate from Ireland to Australia.

ethnic

pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like

heritage

Something handed down from ones ancestors such as celebrations, food and traditions

immigrant

a person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

immigrate

to come to a country of which one is not a native, usually for permanent residence.

nationality

the status of belonging to a particular nation, whether by birth or naturalization: the nationality of an immigrant.

population

all the people in a country or region

race

a group of persons related by common descent or heredity.

refugee

a person who flees for refuge or safety, esp. to a foreign country, as in time of political upheaval, war, etc.

segregation

Keeping people from one race or culture separate from other people
